Ga Kook-hyun is a Korean painter whose practice lies at the intersection of representation and abstraction. 

Through refined chromatic fields and disciplined forms, his works transcend ordinary objects, transforming them into psychological and poetic presences.

가국현은 그동안 정물, 풍경, 인물과 같은 다양한 모티프로 가국현만의 독특한 작품세계를 구축해 왔다. 지금까지 보여준 가국현 작품의 특징을 요약해 보면 보색대비의 강렬하고 세련된 색채와 형태의 적절한 조화, 유려(流麗)한 선(流麗)의 구사, 구성과 층상의 공존을 들 수 있다. 이번 전시를 통해 발표되는 ‘화폭 속 도자기 (감성정물)’ 연작은 가국현이 최근까지 발표한 정물 작품이 새로운 단계로 접어들고 있음을 시사(示唆)하고 있다. 정물 작품에서 장식적 요소로 쓰였던 화병과 같은 도자기들은 전면으로 부각되고, 반대로 정물 작품에서 화폭을 지배하던 꽃과 과일은 도자기를 두드러지게 발돋움시키는 보조적 역할로 바뀌었다. 이런 역할의 변치(變置)는 가국현의 작품 전개방식이 개체간 상호 보완 방식에서 종속 방식으로 전환되고 있음을 의미한다. 

그간 색과 형태의 적절한 조화를 통해 획득한 가국현의 작품세계는 유미주의(唯美主義적) 관점을 기저(基底)로 대중적 친화력과 소통에 방점(傍點)을 두고 있었던 것이 사실이다. 그러나 가국현은 이번 ‘화폭 속 도자기 (감성정물)’ 연작에서 극대화되고 단순화된 도자기의 재현을 통해 극적인 전환기를 맞이했다. 그것은 단지 조형적 아름다움이나 대중적 기호(嗜好)에 영합(迎合)한 시장미술을 지향(志向)하는 것이 아니라 도자기가 갖고 있는 다의적(多義的) 속성과 고요한 정신세계의 추구로 귀결되고 있음을 의미하는 것이다. 

결국, 은은하고 질박한 아름다움, 자연스럽고 꾸밈없는 순수함, 과장되지 않은 편안함, 평면적이면서 입체적이거나 입체적이면서 평면적인 마티에르(Matiere), 관조와 성찰, 소박함과 단순함, 비움과 채움, 함축(含蓄)된 형상과 절제된 표현 같은 특징들이 ‘화폭 속 도자기 (감성정물)’ 연작을 설명하는 중요한 키워드(Keyword)라 할 수 있다. 

Ga Kook Hyun has established his own unique artistic world through various motifs such as still life, landscapes, and figures.

Summarizing the characteristics of his works so far, one can point to the strong yet refined colors achieved through complementary contrasts and the proper harmony of forms, the graceful use of lines, and the coexistence of composition and layering. The “Ceramics on Canvas (Poetic Still life)” series presented in this exhibition suggests that the still-life paintings Ga Kook Hyun has produced in recent years are entering a new stage.

Ceramic objects such as vases, which were previously used as decorative elements in still-life works, now come to the forefront, while the flowers and fruits that once dominated the canvas have changed into auxiliary elements that make the ceramics stand out. This change of role indicates that Ga Kook Hyun’s method of developing his works is shifting from a mutually complementary relationship between objects to a subordinated one.

The artistic world that Ga Kook Hyun has achieved through the proper harmony of color and form has, in fact, been based on an aestheticist perspective, placing emphasis on popular affinity and communication.

However, in this “Ceramics on Canvas (Poetic Still life) ” series, through the depiction of ceramics that are both maximized and simplified, Ga has reached a dramatic turning point.

This does not mean a pursuit of market-oriented art that conforms to formal beauty or popular taste, but rather leads to the pursuit of the multiple meanings and the serene spiritual world inherent in ceramics.

Ultimately, the gentle and unadorned beauty, the natural and plain purity, the unexaggerated comfort, and the matière that is flat yet three-dimensional, or three-dimensional yet flat, together symbolize the quintessence of Korean aesthetics. Features such as contemplation and reflection, simplicity and modesty, emptiness and fullness, implicit forms and restrained expressions can all be considered important keywords that describe the “Ceramics on Canvas (Poetic Still life) ” series.
