I hope that for those who view my works, 

it becomes a moment of rest — a brief pause in time, as if one’s breath lingers for a while along the long path of life.

Artist Jung Cheol (Tony Iron Jung) paints and completes mountains by repeatedly writing the Chinese character 山 (san) — meaning “mountain” — millions of times with an extremely fine brush on samhap jangji (traditional Korean mulberry paper). It is a process that requires extreme concentration and patience, a practice that can be called a form of spiritual training in itself.

The artist, who continuously refines, polishes, and delves into himself through his work, resembles the figure of a seeker — one who endures hardship in the pursuit of truth.

To enhance the expressive clarity while maintaining an Eastern sentiment, he chooses acrylic gouache, a medium that allows colors and textures close to those of traditional mineral pigments (bunchae). In this way, even the smallest details of his work are precise and flawless. In this sense, the artist himself becomes a seeker, and by completing his own paradise within the canvas, he may finally place the finishing touch on the meaning of his work.

The mountains in his paintings have continuously evolved.

There were times when he painted 'Paradises' without a single breeze, places where not even life itself seemed to exist — a timeless realm beyond space. A seeker is, by nature, one who walks the path in search of truth or spiritual enlightenment. Along that journey, one must separate oneself from the secular world and engage in an endless dialogue with one’s inner self in solitude. For such a seeker, 'Paradise' might mean a deeply submerged silence where no sound can be heard. Jung Cheol’s 'Seeker's Paradise' has at times depicted precisely that — a paradise found in solitude and isolation.

However, in his recent series, we can cautiously sense that a subtle change has begun in the artist’s state of mind. Now, he portrays the seeker who, after long and arduous practice, has finally discovered the true path and his own paradise. Perhaps that is why the works now feel warmer and freer — they give comfort and hope to us who view them, reminding us that if we endure the hardships of our days, we too may someday reach such a paradise.

The artist may have wished to remind us all that every person is a 'Seeker' on their own life’s path, and to offer us a small piece of 'Paradise' as a gift for enduring each passing day.

Just as the artist wishes, may these works bring a moment of rest — a gentle pause — into the lives of those who behold them.

나는 작품을 감상하는 분들에게,

인생의 길을 걷는 모든이가 잠시라도 숨결이 머무르듯 

멈춰선 시간 속에 쉼의 시간이 되기를 바란다.

정철 작가는 삼합 장지에 아주 작은 세필로 수천만 개의 산(山) 글자를 겹쳐 쓰는 작업을 통해 '산'을 그리고 완성해낸다. 이는 고도의 집중과 인내가 필요한 작업으로 작업 과정은 곧 수련 과정이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 실제로도 끊임 없이 자기 자신을 갈고, 닦고, 파고들어 작업을 완성해내는 작가와 그런 작가가 작업하는 과정은 그 자체로도 이미 고뇌를 안고 진리를 탐구하기 위해 수련하는 '구도자'들의 모습과 많이 닮아 있다. 동양적인 느낌을 살리되 확실한 전달력을 취하기 위해 동양의 재료인 분채가 가지고 있는 색과 질성에 가까운 표현이 가능한 아크릴 과슈를 재료로서 선택한 것처럼, 작가의 작업은 사실 완성도에 있어서는 작은 것 하나에도 치밀하고 빈틈이 없다. 이런 면에서 어쩌면 작가는 탐구하고 수행하는 '구도자' 그 자체가 되어 자신만의 '낙원'을 화폭 안에 완성함으로써 비로소 작품이 가지는 의미에 화룡점정을 찍는 것일지도 모른다.

작가의 산은 그동안 계속해서 변해왔다. 바람 한 점 없고, 생명조차 존재하지 않을 것 같은, 시공간을 알 수 없는 '낙원'을 그리던 적도 있었다.

구도자란 본래 진리나 종교적 깨달음을 얻기 위해 길을 추구하는 사람을 의미한다. 그 수련의 과정에서 속세와 나를 분리시키고, 고독의 시간 속에 내면과의 끊임 없는 대화를 하는 과정이 필요할 것이다.

그런 구도자에게 '낙원'이란 다만 아무런 소리도 들리지 않는 진정으로 침잠된 상태일지도 모르겠다. 작가가 그리는 '구도자의 낙원' 역시 그런 모습을 하고 있을 때도 있었다. 정말 외롭고 단절된 상태에서 찾은 '낙원'이라고 할까?

하지만 최근의 연작들을 보면 작가의 심경에도 변화가 조금씩 일어나고 있다고 우리는 조심스레 추측해볼 수 있다. 이제는 고된 수련 끝에, 진정한 길을 찾고 본인만의 '낙원'을 찾아낸 구도자를 그려낸다.

그래서인지 더 마음이 가고 더 시원해진다. 그림을 보는 우리들에게도 하루 하루 힘든 삶 속에서 잘 버텨나가다 보면 언젠가 이런 '낙원'에 맞닿아 있지 않을까 하는 희망을 가지게 한다.

작가는 모든 이들이 각자의 인생에서 '구도자'임을 일깨워주고, 매일을 버텨내는 우리들에게 '낙원'을 선물하고 싶었던 걸지도 모른다. 

작가의 바램처럼, 작품을 감상하는 동안만큼이라도 우리의 삶에 '쉼'의 시간이 찾아와준다면 좋겠다.
