My work can be divided into two main contexts.

One is my early works, which interpreted the Koreans sentiment found in old objects from a traditional perspective.

The other began in 2006 with the Pine Tree Series. 

Both tendencies, however, sensitively focus on the psychological reaction between object and subjective representation.

This consistent attitude runs throughout my work, and the motifs are simply a choice to reveal the identity and sentiment of Koreans.

저의 작업은 크게 두 가지 맥락으로 정리를 할 수 있습니다.

하나는 오래된 사물에 깃든 한국인의 정서를 전통적인 관점으로 해석했던 초기 작업이고

다른 하나는 2006년부터 시작한 소나무 연작입니다.

하지만 이 두 가지 경향 모두 대상과 주관적인 표상 사이의 심리적 반응에 예민하게 주목하고 있다는 점에서 동일하고

이는 작품에서 일관되게 흐르는 태도이며, 모티브는 다만 한국인의 정서와 정체성을 보여주기 위한 선택일 뿐입니다.

Introduction of New Works in 2025 (ARTIST NOTE 2025) - SEASCAPE

It has been over 40 years since I settled in Busan. When one thinks of Busan, the sea is what first comes to mind. I have always lived with the thought that someday I would like to work on the refreshing scenery of the sea.

However, painting the sea is not a simple reproduction of scenery. To me, the sea has been beside me for a long time, yet it was never something I could easily capture. This is why I chose not by layering with a brush, but by carving away using the limited material of stone powder.

Through the process of subtraction rather than accumulation, I sought to reveal the depth of time and the layers of emotion held within the sea.

This work is the result of bringing out, for the first time, that long-held desire. Above the monochrome blue sea, seagulls fly, and waves break as they strike against the rocks. The movement of the waves is not violent, but never light; they slowly roll in within the stillness. Blue—deep, heavy, and vast—covers all colors, being both abyss and sky. The further downward, the rougher the texture becomes, as if the power of nature itself were pushing into the canvas.

Rather than “painting” this scene with brushstrokes, I carved the surface as if sculpting. This was both the act of tracing the expressions of the sea, and the process of asking myself how I exist before such a landscape.

What I wish to convey to the audience through this work is the unspoken power that nature throws upon human beings. The meditative quality of a single color and the resonance hidden within it, the overwhelming silence of the sea, and the quiet experience of the human as a small being. Life, in the end, may be nothing more than the repetition of colliding, swaying, and once again finding its place within the vastness of nature.

부산에 정착한 지 40여 년이 되어간다. 부산 하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 것은 바다다. 언젠가는 시원한 바다 풍경을 작업해보고 싶다는 마음을 품고 살아왔다. 

그러나 바다를 그린다는 것은 단순한 풍경의 재현이 아니다. 내게 바다는 오랜 시간 곁에 있었지만, 결코 쉽게 담을 수 있는 존재가 아니었다. 붓이라는 도구로 쌓아올리는 방식이 아닌, 돌가루라는 제한된 재료를 택해 ‘깎아낸다’는 방식으로 전환한 것도 그 때문이었다. 쌓기보다는 덜어내는 과정, 그 속에서 바다가 가진 시간의 깊이와 감정의 층위를 드러내고자 했다.

이번 작업은 그 오랜 마음을 처음으로 꺼내어 구현한 결과다. 푸른 단색의 바다 위로 갈매기들이 날고, 물결은 돌에 부딪혀 부서진다. 격렬하지 않지만 절대 가볍지 않은 파도의 움직임은 정적 속에서 서서히 밀려온다. 푸르고, 묵직하고, 깊다. 모든 색을 덮은 블루는 심연이며 동시에 하늘이다. 아래로 내려갈수록 질감은 더욱 거칠고, 마치 자연의 힘이 그대로 캔버스를 밀고 들어오는 듯하다.

나는 이 장면을 붓질로 ‘그리는’ 대신, 표면을 조각하듯 깎아냈다. 그것은 바다의 표정을 더듬는 일이자, 나 스스로 그 풍경 앞에 어떻게 존재하고 있는지를 묻는 과정이었다.

이 작업을 통해 관객에게 전하고 싶은 것은 자연이 인간에게 던지는 무언의 힘이다. 단색이 주는 명상성과 그 속에 숨겨진 울림, 바다가 주는 압도감과 침묵, 그리고 인간이라는 작은 존재의 고요한 체험. 삶은 결국 그 거대한 자연 속에서 끊임없이 부딪히고, 흔들리고, 다시 자리를 찾는 움직임의 반복일지도 모른다.

Introduction of Works with Pinetree

The reason why artist Koo Myeong-bon settled on the subject of pine trees stems from his desire to express the life and memories of his hometown, where he spent his childhood, through the object of the pine.

For the artist, the pine is not a simple landscape motif, but an object through which his own life is reconstructed.

The sight of pine trees, which can be found everywhere in the mountains and fields, twisted and bent, feels like our human lives themselves.

By borrowing the medium of the pine tree that has endured countless storms in the mountains over long years, the artist wishes to speak in a low and earnest voice, offering us time to reflect on the values that we, living in this era, must remember and never lose.

작가 구명본이 소나무라는 소재에 정착한 것은 어린 시절 보냈던 고향의 삶과 기억을 소나무라는 대상을 통해 표출하고자 한다.

작가의 솔은 단순한 풍경의 모티브가 아닌 제자신의 삶이 재구성 되는 오브제 들이다.

산야에 지천으로 볼 수 있고 꾸불꾸불 휘어진 소나무의 모습이 우리네 인생과 같은 느낌이기 때문이다.

오랜 세월 산야에서 갖은 풍파를 견디어낸 소나무라는 매개를 빌어 이 시대를 살아가는 우리들이 꼭 기억하고 잃어버리지 말아야 할 가치들에 대하여 생각해 볼 수 있는 시간을 갖기를

낮은 음성으로 이야기 하고자 한다.
